James Joyce

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Today is the 100th anniversary of the publishing of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. It was his first novel and I remember struggling through it in high school.

The protagonist of the novel is Stephen Dedalus and the novel traces his religious and intellectual awakening. Joyce is probably more famous for two of his other novels, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake, both published much later.
